Note to self

I've realised that I have had my blog running for over 8 years now, in fact it might be coming up to 9 years.

It has  followed me through many journeys and also missed other important ones. This has been my personal blog. I don't expect others to read it, I don't use it for advertising, it's my space to write my thoughts.

Now that I'm a new mother I have more things to post about and hope to help other mummy's but again this is my personal space and I don't work for anyone and am giving my personal opinions and experience.

I will continue to share recipe's and write about my trips and keep this blog going even if it gets deserted for months on end. I will try and be consistent with my posts however it can be hard as my brain is pretty weak lately. Sleep deprivation being the main cause.

Hopefully in a few months I'll be slightly better in terms of sleep yet I'm sure there will be other things on my mind to cause me to forget to write.

Fingers crossed or fingers to the keyboard!!

To have a mind of a writer isn't easy

It is not unknown that to be able to write a good piece it is by living different experience's from first hand. Everyone has different ways of defining an experience, it could be the birth of a child, a death of someone close, a trip you would never forget or a celebration that seemed like yesterday.
In addition reading is fantastic to widen your vocabulary and knowledge of creative writing. As you indulge into different novels you experience different feelings which is a feeling I would like to reflect when I write however unlike many others before me, I don't find it easy.
From a young age I would always be in my room playing imaginary games where I would be someone important like a princess or a rock star and  then I would scribble down my stories hoping people would enjoy my future book collection as I did books like the "Babysitter's club" and "Sweet Valley High" series. have always enjoyed writing to find an escapism from reality.
Unfortunately, by the time I went to secondary school it was already decided that I would be in the "special needs" group and every year I was put in a group to give support to girls who suffered from Dyslexia and other issues similar to mine. I was knocked down from any dreams because of my level of Grammar and comprehension. I accept my level of writing is lower than others but I also feel the support I was meant to be given wasn't supportive enough.  I felt special but in a negative sense. I found it more difficult to feel accepted because I didn't understand my problem. I remember the day I had started reception and  my teachers couldn't understand me between my mumbling and tears running down my face and they soon discovered I was speaking Spanish and got a girl from another year to come and speak to me. I still find this weird because I did speak English. I guess those kiddy nerves kicked in. From that day I was labelled as a child with language difficulty and I never progressed in school. It was frustrating for me, as no matter how hard I tried to write and be up to standard I couldn't get any of my teachers to notice my efforts.  They really thought I was lazy and my parents would punish me instead of understanding because they knew as little as me.
I didn't stop writing and I have a grand collection of poems that I have written and I know they aren't masterpieces but I have escaped whilst writing. I don't think there is anything wrong with that I will continue to write.
There is a message I'm trying to share with this post. I have signed up and given up so many things in my life out of boredom,  not being good enough or just out of pure laziness. I did ballet, gymnastics and tap dance, I tried Karate, played the Piano, Cello, Recorder, Guitar, Drums and even had singing classes in hope to be a star, I was a Brownie, almost a Girl Guide,  a Cub for a day, I went to to the Air Training Corps and was a great cadet till I hit my late teens, I played on the  Football, Hockey and Netball team. I danced hip hop, tried break dance andI even managed a few steps of Sevillanas and was completely disappointed I didn't get the Spanish genes for creativity and rhythm. I've had roller skates, blades and a board and still wish I had the chance to sign up to more things and i'm sure I'll give up on loads more, because evenhough I'm a go-getter and love to try new things, not many of these things are my real passion. I will always write as long as I feel I need to.  Anyone can give us advise but no one can quash your dreams or passions.
You need to continue doing what is good for you and if you can make a success out of it that is an extra. But do the things for yourself. Share your efforts somehow and you will be recognised. You won't always get the feedback you expect but this moulds us. I want to continue reliving my adventures by writing them down. I still have to improve as I want people to feel I feel and see what I see through their minds. I know it needs to be interesting too and for this reason I want to continue living life spontaneously.

Citizen of Earth having a Rant

I know I have blogged several posts on Spain and Catalonia and this ongoing political battle they have had many a times. I try not to be biased with my posts as I'm not only partly Spanish but I am partly Catalan too. But what I do want to post about is the ignorance parents are teaching their children.

As a teacher I have noticed the different types of students I have and what beliefs they also have been taught to have.
I teach English at a language school and the other day I was teaching my group of 8 year olds. I told one of the kids that he spelt the days of the week wrong, (he spelt all the days ending in I instead of y, mondai)
I told the student, in English you write the words ending in Y and the student replied to me, but i'm Catalan and this is how we write.
I was rather surprised with that comment considering this is an 8 year old kid who doesn't know about politics but knows that Catalonia should be seperate from Spain and that Catalan is more important to him that Spanish and English put together. The only people that can be teaching this kid, which is one of many kids is either their parents or teachers at school.

I don't want to go against anyones thoughts on politics but  I don't agree with brainwashing kids either. Isn't a child that can speak Spanish and Catalan a lot richer in knowledge than a Kid that only speaks one language like Catalan which is only spoken in one part of Spain? Isn't Spanish far more important to learn considering it is one of the most spoken languages? Shouldn't we be teaching our kids it is better to have knowledge and culture from different backgrounds?

I don't want to go against people ethics and beliefs but I do believe people shoul stop being si ignorant and teaching their children a one sided view of politics. Spain is a beautiful country full of culture, the South and North of Spain are completely different just like the North and South of the UK, or Italy or any other country.

Why not teach your kids to appreciate the two languages this country has to offer? I understand we who live in Catalonia should speak Catalan but parents need to stop limiting their children with speaking only Catalan, this is not a way of keeping the culture and language alive, it is a way of dumbing down your kids and being facist to other people across Spain.
I don't want to generalize but I really can't understand the obsession.
We know  Catalans suffered a lot and believe they will be better independent but until that day arises it's time to embrace your neighbours, being Spanish, Portugues, Morroccon or from wherever and opening your mind to everyone.

When I first moved here I ended up detesting Catalan because people were forcing me to speak the language, I never learnt it properly. I have had several experiences like this, I also went to my local GP and got a telling off for not speaking in Catalan, I thought, why should I if I can communicate better in Spanish. I went to Italy and in two months I was speaking Italian because no one was forcing me. Just the way Franco forced out the Catalans and Jews back in the day, it seems like the Catalans are still angry but they shouldn't. Everyone makes mistakes and if you want people to embrace this culture there is no need to be forceful.
Catalans should be proud of their roots but they shouldn't reject the rest of Spain. People say Catalonia is not Spain, Catalonia is Spain for now and it isn't changing yet, so stop the hating and brainwashing and respect everyone. If I speak Spanish let me, If I speak Catalan let me too. Just let me feel free to speak what I feel comfortable in and don't dictate to anyone what they should speak as we left a dictatorship over 30 years ago.

I have been brought up English, Scotish, Spanish and Catalan and I don't ever think I am just one nationality, instead I feel a big part of this Earth, a citizen of Earth.

Who sets the ground rules?

Today my close friend brought up a very interesting discussion and point.

Footballers are paid millions to play football and be a good role model, being fit and healthy is important for any athletes image, that's why they are being paid.

Athletes go through rigourous training and then have to go through tests for any doping and if anything illegal is found they will be disqualified and removed from any competition.

What about the models and photoshop? Isn't photoshop an ´illegal move´ when it comes to tampering with a models body?

Why is there a need to photoshop an image when they already hired a beauty that will look good and model? I'm sure most of the models really don't need photoshop. Even if any famous person had a spot in their shoot it wouldn't really matter to us, they would still look beautiful in our eyes (unless you are one of those online bullies shredding every person to pieces.)

My point is, why shouldn't magazines and whoever tampers with photos not be fined just the way a strong athlete does who tries to maintain his image. We know models also party and take their drugs but that is for another time and they can continue modelling, however, any photographer or company that sell these images to magazines and sites which portray the perfect size -2 woman, should be banned if not fined from touching up images that are for public use. Filters just like Instagram should be enough (joke), and other methods for art purpose and lighting is fine but removing flesh is unecessary.

Rant Over

Sharing Animal Love

It is said that if you have animals in your life, you are likely to live longer.
Animals are meant to give you inner peace, take away depression and lots more positive things.
I totally agree with these statements and facts.
I have had animals all my life and without animals I think I would be a miserable so and so.

Whenever you see videos go Viral it is normally with animals being cute, playful, and you even see connections between different animals or with humans.
Sometimes I have more love and respect for animals than I do humans.

Animals are survivors, they sometimes can show empathy and can interact with us without needing to say the actual words to us. Is it because most animals are innocent beings? My boyfriend never wanted pets and now we have two cats and he is so adorable with them. It shows his softer side which is something everyone needs to be a nice being.

Through my path of Buddhism and meditation I try and see what animals have that makes us nicer people. They reflect mostly love and empathy. Not everyone knows how to do this. They look for comfort as well as their independence.

My mother once told me that if you meet a person that doesn't like animals is not likely to be a nice person, or someone who can share the same sort of love we have for others. I sometimes think this can be true.
I can understand if someone is afriad of a certain specie, that's normal dispicing them in not normal.
Animals are generally harmless and when they are abused by humans these people are weak and have their own mental problems they need to sort out.

If you are an animal lover I hope you agree with me on how they are so precious. I want to share some photos of the animals in my life and I will try and share the love I have if it can make someone happier.

National day of Catalonia

On the 11th of September most of the World will be remembering the perished souls from the twin towers, and in Catalonia people remember that but remember more the "diada de Catalunya" National day of Catalonia.
It commemorates the defeat of the Catalan troops fighting during the war of the Spanish Succession. The holiday was first celebrated in 11 September 1886, was suppressed by the Franco dictatorship in 1939 and reinstated in 1980 by the government of Catalonia, upon its restoration after the Franco dictatorship

Whenever you are in conversation with a Catalan you will find out important history but if you want to avoid any heated discussions avoid mentioning the independence of Catalunya, or any critisim of the politics involved, this is a double sided argument where I neither agree or disagree on, however, saying that, tomorrow is a special day in Catalunya and no one should try and spoil it and everyone should respect eachother.

Saying that I already started to stir trouble unintentionally, I shared a picture (below) on one of my many social media sites, which to me is a friendly message, but I already got people from both sides putting comments, sadly the Catalans said they don't us and we don't want them (Spain). I know that not everyone thinks the same but sadly there is so much rivalry instead of animosity. That was not my intention nor my friend who originally posted it.

Here is the picture. Visca Catalunya i Viva EspaƱa, tots junts, todos juntos.

I love Spain and I love Catalonia and want to feel I can belong to both without being judged in anyway.

Wake Up Spain

Many people would read my blog and think that I really dislike living in Spain with all my complaining about how this country functions. That would be a misinterpretation though. I love Spain and love living here but like every single country in the World it does have its ups and it has its downs.
After working 3 weeks in a small town in Catalunya I came back quite disappointed with the "hardworking Catalans". For almost all my life I was led to believe that the Catalan community are the hardest working in Spain but after being in a small town it is just as bad as any other town in the rest of Spain or even in Italy (I lived in an Italian village too).
Businesses are complaining about Crisis, they complain at how the Chinese Bazaars and the 1 Euro shops are taking their business, the Chinese are buying out all the bars in Barcelona and as the days and weeks pass Barcelona is becoming as multi cultural as London or any big city is.
This is not bad in my eyes but its not being accepted by the locals.
I don't want to critisise any locals but the fact is that Spanish people don't want to work as hard.
I completely understand that it is hard to function on a daily basis when there is a lot of heat involved, you do feel lazier and less likely to do work when you are in hot and humid conditions but this can't always be the excuse.

I was in a small town and I was shocked and embarrassed at how we were treated there by the local bars. We would go every evening to spend EUROS in bars and the staff never seemed to be content with the business. I actually had one member of staff complain at me the customer telling me that we need to stop disturbing him and order and pay for all our drinks at once. REALLY?
This man was not busy, we were literally his only customers and we were spending a minimum of 50 euros a night for 3 weeks, do the math. This man was fed up of us going up to the bar and ordering drinks, he was fed up of us wanting to pay individually because some of us would have to go back to work. We felt bad for ordering in a bar. I always say: "only in Spain": My fellow Spanish friends may defend this one man and say that this doesn't show what Spain is like but its just one of many examples.

On Facebook my friends post pictures of their local businesses and ask you to go there instead of any Chinese Bazaar. How are we expected to use the Spanish businesses when they are always closed? The shops in Spain are still funcioning the way they did 20 years ago. Times have changed and excuse the pun but so should the shops now. How can a person working 9-6 go to a bank if they close everyday at 14.00. They are open once a week till 20.00, what if you finish at 20.00?
My point is that if Spain really want to get out of this crisis they really need to sort themselves out. We need to develop as a Country, there is so much potential and its being wasted on laziness.
When one wants a plumber, an electrician or anything like that they have to wait days on end and the problem is that because all are on the same level, no one seems to be in competition with one another so they all will come when its good for them and not for you.

If you do decide you want to live in Spain you do have to learn how to be patient and accept these things. Everything you want done will get done but in Spanish time not your own. So don't predict you will take a day to do one task here because that isn't how things work.
I know many people would be angry with me dissing the system but these people need to wake up and see it for themselves. Spain need to wake up.

Term is about to begin.

Summer has come to an end to some and mine is on its way. Next week I start work and am looking forward to starting my new career path in teaching.
For the past 6 months this is all I wanted to do, pass my CELTA to become a teacher and after months of being broke and scrounging I will finally get my first official and dignified pay cheque!
So excited for that moment.

So, I completed my goals, now my mind is setting some new ones, one of the main ones is next year, I am already thinking of moving somewhere. At first Turkey or Dubai were my options but now it is slowly switching to Asia, maybe China or even an Island. China is a new world to me and I have always wanted to learn Chinese but this is going to be a tough decision to make as its a complete different lifestyle.
I have already started looking at jobs and downloaded a Chinese language app to pick up on words and see if I can learn a couple of phrases.
I'll be looking further into this as time passes and see if this can really be a viable decision. It looks like i'm not 100% ready to settle down in  Barcelona, I feel the need there is more to explore and discover before laying my roots. Another question is whether I ever will manage to lay them out at all.

To a new adventure!!

Expresiones

When you set your goals make sure to be conscious to your surroundings when making your choices. Some of the things around you may not be there at the other end. This doesn't mean this is a bad thing, it can also be very positive, this will always depend on the way you look at your life and at that moment.

Although it is sad to put an end to certain aspects of your life there is also going to be a positive beginning to something.

Whatever decision is made I know I can survive what comes along with it, we all can, it is about believing anything is possible aslong as you step out of the box now and again.

Its a cats World.

There are many famous animal quotes around relating the animal to humans, they say it in pscycology too, people who aren`t fond of amimals are not good people because it isn't believe to be normal and that humans and animals should get along. I do believe that, and one thing I noticed whilst living in Turkey is that cat's are respected animals, (more than dogs), they retain the city from rats because they hunt them down, they are independent so they don't get attached to other cats or humans, they eat what they get fed and the fittest and smartest end up being the "Fat cat" of their and our society. Seeing cats all over Istanbul and Safranbolu reminded me the importance of the natural habitat. Animals should be allowed to live in their wild urban city. If everyone gave a little and started feeding the stary animals and giving them their own comfort zone we would definitly live happier. Istanbul was clean and full of animals you could stroke, what more could an animal lover ask for? If Barcelona people that are living here did the same and looked after the stray animals, maybe we would have an even cleaner city, cats are nice to look at and it would be animal friendly. Just a thought on making an animal more superior than it is treated.

Finding my path - Inner choices

I think I have finally understood the meaning of reaching a crossroad and seeing things from a different perspective, I have been able to overcome that fearful sensation I get when faced with a problem or decision that can affect the next year of my life. I have always tended to put every doubt or problem behind me, in a corner, I have now learnt I need to face it as it comes, First of all I need to be able to relax, switch off my mind for some time and not allow anything to intervene. Although it is hard, once the balance is found it won't be so hard to lose the reigns.

With this break away I have come to realise that only I can save myself and for once I have beaten that feeling that often feels like it squashes my insides, tenses my oesophogus but this time I have given myself the time for meditation and time to clear my head.

Ever since I have been back I feel there is a certain change in the air I breathe, A sense of strength and happiness combine and make me feel that everything really is ok. I had almost a month to get to know myself.

I have come back from Turkey more relaxed and ready for the next stage of my path. I am still slightly unsure which route to take. If I reacha tiny hill I know i'll go the right way down, aslong as it all compensates in weight, and balance.

Privacy doesn't exist here

I'm so tired of not having my intimacy,
I can't wait to be able to run naked and free,
Without having to worry about people walking in on me,
All I want is a bit of privacy.

Thank you Turkey for letting me Grow

It has been over a week since we have arrived to the small city of Safranbolu and I must say it hasn't been the most easiest of things for myself or the other teachers to adjust to the culture. Suprisingly it isn't Turkey as a country that is conservative, in fact I was shocked how European this country is. I don't want to sound ignorant but I was ignorant to what Turkey was like.

I didn´t come to Turkey as a tourist nor to party,

but as a school teacher for a prestigious school in a small city 200km away from Istanbul in (6 hours away by bus).
The school is an amazing school with facilities better than I have seen in  London, Spain and Italy.
Every single classroom has its own interactive board, internet is all over the school, a great canteen with homemade food, a basketball court indoor and outdoor. To be honest it is a school I would send my children.

The school is very conservative and this was my culture shock, maybe because I wasn't prepared. The school is muslim and the children obiously pray and read the Kuran in the mornings and I have no problem and I respect their religion. We don't have to wear head scarves but we do have to go covered up. This was something I was informed about, but what  I wasn't informed about was the fact I wasn't allowed to drink alcohol or smoke outside of the school in our free time. I don't smoke, so this is not a problem but I do like to have a beer with my friends, especially after a long hard week at work.

Unfortunately we were told off by the school, as drinking is not allowed at all. If you are a teacher at this school you have to follow their strict rules, no drinking, no smoking, socialising with other members lower or higher than you, and always asking permission to go out, or atleast telling people where we are going.

I am almost 30 years old and have travelled to many places and each place I have been to has made me stronger and made me learn from my experiences. At first I was very angry with the school, I was offended that I couldn't do what I wanted but then I took time out and meditated.
Why am I angry at this culture? I am a guest working here and need to respect their culture. I can drink beer or wine whenever I like, and having a detox is really good now and again.

This was a wake up call for me and it was also a lesson. I realized how lucky I am coming where I come from, this is not being against any religion but I have learnt to be an independent woman and here it seems you can't be that way. I have always been able to do what I like with caution and seeing how some locals aren't allowed to do the things I have been able to do makes me feel I have always taken my freedom forgranted.

After that I also learnt that I am the one that needs to adapt not the locals. Since this wake up call I have actually started to enjoy my stay in Turkey a lot more. I'm refraining from alcohol which means my liver is having a break. My beer belly is finally going down, although I am not getting a Baclava belly (turkish dessert), but atleast it's healthy.
Instead of drinking beer i'm enjoying the turkish tea. Instead of clubbing, i'm visiting beautiful sites, meeting some amazing people and having time to myself and having a very clear mind.

The people of Turkey are the most hospitable people I have ever met in the World. I have nevere felt so well looked after and welcome by anyone, not even family. I have been showered with gifts and been taken to places I would never have been able to see if I hadn't integrated with the people.
I don't like being a typical tourist and seeing the main sites, I want to be part of it and after almost 2 weeks in Turkey I can say I have adapted quite well to the culture and the city life.
I even chanced a haircut which I am extremely happy about.

Thanks to my open mind and the adventurer in me I can see I have grown as a person and feel I have learnt so much in such little time.
People who live in their bubbles do really need to experience something like this.

Thank you  Turkey!!!

My Planned Future Timeline

May has been a really great month, apart from the weather I heard, I have met and made new friends and passed my CELTA :) (That was my biggest goal and I suceeded).

I must say the weather did really help, sorry to sound selfish to the rest living in Barcelona, but the fact that it rained and was cloudy really helped me to pass my course, as I was at home doing assignments instead of being distracted by the sun, sea and mojitos.

It seems that June and July are heading in the same direction  and I am extremely exited. I feel like I am going on a new adventure. I still hesitate and get nervous at the thought that I will be doing new things, travelling to a country where I don't speak their language but all of this is an experience I can never forget and will give me something I didn't have before, although I don't know what that is yet.

I woke up this morning and first my friend called to ask me to go to the beach, I wasn't sure about going but I had already cleaned the flat, in the meantime I managed to get two Teaching Job Interviews :) and all this is happening just before I go on a trip to Tuscany with my partner and then i'll be heading out with a colleague to work at a school in Turkey, (away from the riots)
Then when i come back from working in July I will have a small break with mon mere et mon soer in Paris, ooh laa laa, (sorry for the stereotyping)

Not only that, my lovely friend Invadia is coming to visit and I will get to chill with her and go to the beach.

Then there are my near future desires, this is harder but will be done:
August is when I will get a job in London so I can visit and spend time with my family, poor things,

September or October I come back and work full-time in one or a few nice schools, will work hard all year and get ready to prepare next summer!

These are my personal goals for the next few months, I have had a really negative time where I didn't think I was capable of change or moving on. I now have my wishes listed and I have to remain positive, give life a go instead of crawling into the den of self pity. This may come across as a brag and a half but it really isn't.

I had to hit rock bottom to see what  I can achieve, I don't suggest or want anyone to get there but if they do, they can come up, they can get out of any hole and if they have people surrounding them it is better.
Sometimes I am too open about my life experiences, it isn't to show off, it's to share moments and when you have people supporting you it really does help. I have met people along the way that didn't get out of their hole, they didn't put faith in themselves. They made the effort of moving to a new country and trying out a different culture but this person had no faith in herself and needed it to move forward.
It is important to open up to friends, don't lose your identity and don't be afraid of anything.

Don't let anyone tell you what you should of shouldn't do.

My month of May and beginning of a new era

In the past month, A LOT has happened.

After intense moments of feeling lost and not knowing what to do with my life, I finally decided to try and conquer one goal I had set myself for years. I signed up to do the CELTA in May. I was very adamant about doing anything, I didn't think I was capable of doing much. Then after going through a very tough patch I managed to pick myself up by setting myself a goal.
That goal had been there for a while, parked on the bench and I finally got myself together and did it.
The course began at the beginning of May just gone and it finished on the 30th. I don't think I have been so happy with everything that this course entailed. I was told that this was a very intense course and that I was expected to work very hard for a whole month. I knew I was closing myself off from society for 30 days, I even deleted my Facebook account for a few weeks, (I'm a FB whore and needed to join again to become friends with my class mates, even though i was seeing them everyday).

When I joined I thought I knew what I would expect and when it comes to the content and it was great, but what did surprise me is all the great people  I met along the way. Everyone from a different background with a different story to tell, a month would pass and it would feel as though I had known these strangers that I now call friends from a long time ago.

By meeting such wonderful people it helped me get by, giving eachother moral support for when we had tough days or were terribly nervous before a lesson.

I don't know if and when I will see everyone again but I will try my best to see all.

A few months back I had set myself goals in my mind and i'm slowly achieving those goals.
I'm being positive and I believe that only good will come because I choose my destiny, we all do.

My adventure began when I set foot into that classroom and now it continues, next week I will be whisked away to Italy with my boyfriend and his family. We will see beautiful sites and enjoy eachothers company.

I will then come back and get myself ready for my trip of the year. Myself and a friend and colleague are off to work in a school Karabuk, Turkey. I have never done anything like this before, (as in work abroad without knowing where I am going) and like I did with my  Colombia trip I am going to keep a record of my experience in Turkey.

I am going from the 14th of June until the 8th of July, then I will be coming back from that and going to Paris with my mum and sister. We haven't had a holiday in over ten years together so it is going to be amazing.

I am very excited about this whole new experience, meeting fantastic guys and gaining back my confidence to do what I want to do. I have always wanted to travel at some point in my life and now im doing it. Atleast it can beat my "things to do before im 30 bucket list".

Lets see how this new journey goes....

Sun and Sea

Witnessed a moment that only my memory can capture,
A moment that recurs daily, but will never be unique as today.
The blazing star that gives us life, heat and a start to happiness,
Mirroring itself and setting fire to the Mediterranean sea.
This moment gives this city a beautiful wake up for all those beginning their day.
That is a picture perfect moment stored in my memory bank
Priceless

Confusion

Looking up at the crimson skies,
Wondering if its right to break all ties,
I’ve been fighting with my heart and mind for so long,
I just don’t want to decide and feel like I’m doing wrong,

When I hold him in my arms at night,
I always forget about our last silly fight,
I don’t want to make any more mistakes,
I want us to be happy for goodness sake.

It took so long for him to fall in love,
I was patient and knew it would all fit like a glove,
But years have passed and I feel empty inside,
I know he still wants me but something has died.

I’m looking down from the mountain top,
I don’t want this relationship to be a flop,
The world seems so small from up here,
I wish I could stay until everything becomes clear.
