Anti Crisis Beauty tips - "Waxing"

***

For over 10 years now I have been doing my own hair removal and it has got to the point where I am so obsessed with this that it was time I did a blog post on comparisons and share it.

Most ladies (and now men) like to go to the beauty salon and get themselves pampered or they have a fear of waxing themselves so they go to the centre as its quick and easy, but now that we are in times of crisis, not all of us can afford paying out to get our legs, bikini lines, and underarms done. So why not try a bit of body DIY?
I personally think I have been a total of 5 times to a beauty salon to get waxed, why?
It´s not because I´m cheap, but because whenever I have gone to get my legs waxed or sugared it has never been up to my own standard of perfection. I hate the fact that I have paid 20 € for my legs to be done, to go home and find a little patch that the therapist missed. So as the saying goes, "want a job done, better do it yourself".

So that is the approach I have taken on myself, my boyfriend, family members and friends that don´t mind going under my hands of complete perfection.
A lot of my family members tell me I should take a course on beauty as I seem to enjoy it a lot. My answer to that is, yes I love it, but its a hobby and not a profession I would like to take on.

What I would like to do here is, compare the different methods that can be done at home, which is the most effective in painless hair removal, beauty and lastly but most importantly, in cost!!

Shaving / The razor blade -

Firstly I must say about this, my mum, being a Spanish lady she has always been against the shaving method and with great reason, so maybe her influence has rubbed off on me. But I agree with her on this. A lot of ladies shave their own legs, bikini lines and armpits and I although this is
most probably the quickest option, it isn´t one I would ever recommend, for me this is a no go unless it is really, really urgent. I used to shave my underarm but after going on a surprise holiday to Morocco and not having the razor blade to do my underarms in the shower and then having to disguise these thick black hairs I decided enough was enough, I'd rather endure a 30 second pull on the skin with wax or my silk epil and no longer worry about those dark, disgusting hairs popping out.
Shaving makes your leg hairs grow 10 times faster and thicker and if you leave it more than one day it feels like a mans unshaved face. Some girls say this is the best choice as the other options hurt too much or its time consuming, but I think this is just an excuse as waxing doesn´t hurt that much, especially after the first couple of sessions.

The Silk Epil -

A lot of people are quite scared of this option, they think this is most painful method, and I must admit, the first time I ever used one of these I wanted to scream the house down. But my mum got me my own silk epil for my birthday and I decided that I had to brave it up, as they say "pain is beauty" and in this case, it really is. My mum has always been so against shaving so it was either waiting for her to take me to get my legs waxed (when I was a teen) or occupying an evening to myself of pampering "DIY".
So I started with the silk epil and I got used to it, it no longer hurt as much and it was quick, but it does seem to coz ingrowing hairs and each time I have used it, the hairs seem to grow faster, although it still takes a few weeks.

Silk Epil and waxing for me have been the best options as the sil epil is about 60€ and lasts years. Wax is also cheap, takes a while for the hairs to grow back and if you want to do it from home you can.

Waxing and its many methods

There is no secret to waxing, its just "manning up" to the situation. People that say that this method is too painful is an excuse because they are lazy, like the easy option and can´t be brave pulling out some hairs (unless you have very sensitive skin.)
The Wax Strip -

I dislike this method, although it´s handy as it´s clean, but its expensive for the amount of strips you get in a packet and depending on the strips, they are sometimes not strong enough or the wax sticks more to the skin than the hair to the actual strip. I have tried this method a few times on my underarms and bikini line and I´m not a fan of it.

Pots for Upper Lips / Underarms and facial hair -

This method is great for upper lips, facial hairs and underarms. Its less wax to deal with, its quick and strong enough to put on one layer of wax and rip off! Ha ha Sounds painful but I promise you, after your first time it will not hurt so much. Just do it properly. Add the right amount of wax and as you rip it off in one, quickly too, put your hand on the stripped area and your skin will soothe the pain. Pots are really cheap and they are long lasting. You can buy the microwavable pots or the ones you put on your stove. Only problem with waxing these areas is that you have to give yourself time before going out, if not you will be displaying a very red area on your face and if you want to avoid being stared at, its best to dedicate yourself to this when you don´t have a dinner party.

Leg Waxing!
You can buy the pots for this, they are cheap to buy. One of my critisims for this is that you heat this in the microwave and by the time you get to your second leg you will have to reheat the wax, which is time consuming and frustrating as you have to wait for it to cool down again, or until you are finished removing all them hairs.

And the Winner is (for legs).....

...The Portable Hair Removing Wax Machine

I bought myself this machine last year when I was in Italy.

It cost me 12 Euros, which included the machine, 4 wax refills and a huge roll of strips. This was the biggest bargain ever!

The first time I used this, it was a complete disaster. I plugged in the machine and started trying rolling the wax onto my boyfriends skin (he was my guinea pig) and all I managed to do was pull on the hairs and rip them out without needing the wax. My poor bf wanted to kill me, and there was me laughing thinking he was a wimp.

After I realised he wasn´t a wimp but I was doing it wrong. You are meant to leave the machine heating for about 15 minutes and then start rolling the wax onto your skin.

This machine is amazing. It takes me 10 - 15 minutes to wax my legs, its clean, efficient and I promise you, it isn´t painful at all.

The machine rolls the wax onto your legs or chosen area evenly, there is no gloopy bits. You can put the wax all over your legs in one and then start putting the strips and pulling.

What I normally do, is the front part of both my legs and then I unplug it for the back of my legs. That way the wax doesn´t go hard and its extremely comfortable to use.

If you are looking for an option of hair removal, I really recommend this out of all the machines.

I have also now got a new deal on these web sites which have brilliant offers and have started the Photodepilation but I can opinion on it just yet as I still have 5 more sessions to go!

  1. Waxing is really the best choice for me if I am not in a rush :). The hair doesn't grow that fast unlike shaving. Yes it hurts but after many sessions of doing it I already got used to pain. So for me waxing is the best :)

  2. I agree with, Janet. Waxing is the most effective method for hair removal. However, it is not advisable to do it on your own, as you may carry out the procedure improperly. Better let your preferred esthetician to do the session to make sure that it is successfully done.
